CHINA MERCHANTS BANK, TRAINING HOTEL, SHENZHEN, GUANGZHOU PROVINCE, CHINA

THE  NATIONAL CHINA MERCHANTS BANK (CMB) WITH HEADQUARTERS IN SHENZHEN IS PRINCIPALLY A DOMESTIC CHINESE BANK.

CMB HAD ACQUIRED A TIRED SMALL HOTEL IN SHENZHEN, BUILD IN THE SEVENTIES WHEN THE CITY OF SHENZHEN WAS FIRST BEING DEVELOPED. WE WERE BRIEFED TO TURN THIS BUILDING INTO A MODERN FACILITY OF HIGH-END RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION TO HOUSE MANAGERS ATTENDING TRAINING WORKSHOPS AND OTHER FUNCTIONS. THE BUILDING COMPRISED TWO ACCOMMODATION AND FUNCTION-ROOM WINGS SET AT 100 DEGREES WITH THE ENCLOSED QUANTRANT FOR LOBBY SPACE WITH A SEGMENTED HELICAL PERIMETER WALL.

TO GIVE THE BUILDING A BRIGHT NEW APPEARANCE WE INTRODUCED A UNIFYING GLASS WALL ROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE PODIUM WHILE PAINTING THE ORIGINAL ENCLOSING WALLS IN PRIMARY COLOURS. THE THREE CIRCULATION TOWERS WHERE CLAD IN RED STAINLESS STEEL, WHILE THE GUEST ROOM FLOOR WERE CLAD IN PALE GREEN POWDER-COATED ALUMINIUM AND GREEN GLASS CURTAIN WALLS. ALL PANELS IN THE EXTERNAL TOWER WALLS ARE SET SLIGHTLY OFF THE VERTICAL TO GIVE THE WHOLE BUILDING A DYNAMIC APPEARANCE.

THE INTERIOR OF THE LOBBY INTRODUCED SEMINAR AND FUNCTION ROOMS  LOCATED BEHIND THE ORIGINAL WALLS TO PROVIDE THE PRIVACY REQUESTED BY THE CLIENT. A CONCRETE ROOF WAS REMOVED TO PROVIDE NATURAL LIGHT TO THE NOW LARGELY ENCLOSED SPACE

THE DESIGN MET THE CLIENTS EXPECTATIONS AND PROVIDED AN ICONIC ADDITION TO  THE BANK'S  CORPORATE PROPERTY PORTFOLIO.
